I also saw people talking about the tag tree and tag synonym system being used on Fanexus? I am not aware of the site but their solutions, so some have said, might also he useful to here.
last.fm has (had? i cant find it now) a process whereby they have the community suggest/vote on name alts (so for instance jp artist romanizations and "sam & dave" vs. "sam and dave", etc. ). and basically all the alternatives would just redirect to one. thought about that quite a bit with the tag situation here--not sure if it's helpful but wanted to mention it!
