every once in a while the siren song of building an operating system calls to me. this is something I wish I knew more about, and would be the primary motivation for undergoing such an endeavor. I read something by the main guy behind serenity OS this morning though where he said the main motivation for him to start building serenity was because he wanted a desktop experience tailor-made for himself (or something like that). that's all well and good, and I want the same thing (which is why I'm obsessive over things like emacs and NixOS), but surely I don't have to start at the operating system level for that (I also realize that serenity OS specifically is largely an educational and fun project).

or do I? maybe I do need to implement memory paging from scratch just to have that!
