  1. ♡ a heart – yes/accept/good, main action, jump
  2. ⧖ hourglass/cup – no/later/stop/skip/fast forward, actions relating to time, actions related to consuming?
  3. ☢︎ coin/sort of inverse hazard sign/sort of recyling sign/maybe just a circle – related to items/money or powerful abilities, maybe shields?
  4. ❖ diamond – context/information, lightbult/ideas? also has a blue x in it in a different location to every other controller’s blue x which is important

also warm and cool hemispheres and bouba/kiki hemispheres

edit: oh yeah and going back to the cards thing vertical are the red suits (cyan is a type of red now don’t worry about it) and horizontal are the (taken waaaay more loosely) black suits

edit 2: as per Ammie’s comment I got mixed up on which controller position hadn’t been used for a blue X (or blex) before, I will have to ponder and reconsider this, but I am very sleepy right now so not now

Since the buttons are typically (in my experience)

  • accept, confirm, towards, most common action
  • deny, cancel, remove, away (and what is jumping if not becoming away from the ground?)
  • change, primary special interaction
  • show, secondary special interaction

I think my answer would ultimately end up being similar to the PlayStation layout, but filtered through an American cultural lens, because these line up fairly one to one with the PS button symbols.

  • primary: ✅ (maybe with sides of equal length to avoid being overly literal)
  • secondary: ❌ (I came up with this independently, it's a good choice! If I can't have even one match, then 🚫 but I won't be happy about it)
  • tertiary: 🌀
  • quaternary: ☰

Or you could use symbols from a music player:

  • primary: ▶️
  • secondary: ⏹️
  • tertiary: ⏏️ (least happy about this one)
  • quaternary: ⏺️

You could also potentially use arithmetic symbols: plus for yes, minus for no, multiply for change, divide for show.

I am sorry to tell you that the Japanese and European SNES controllers have their blue X in the same position as yours. Position 2 is the only currently unused blue X zone (unless one counts the Gamecube controller's grey X, which some games colour blue for convenience. I would not count this personally)
