often i want to quickly try different types of the same effect, but i'm not usually quickly swapping between different effects, so i'd say one plugin per effect type, unless the effects are specifically designed to be used in combination for some reason
also makes things nice in terms of categorizing plugins, and means things are already labelled nicely (ie if i see i have 'alloyed fx unit' on a channel it doesn't tell me what that's doing, if i have 'alloyed reverb' on a channel i can quickly see what that's doing)
