it probably varies depending on what client(s) you use, but in the normal web interface, if you go to your notifs and scroll down you should be able to unmark the "play sound" options on the different categories. i had to look this up 😅

its the little sliders (which do something different on each page you're on, apparently?) and not the notifications tab in preferences like you'd expect
