so many, it's embarrassing how often I've fallen for this. here's a few: the witcher, ray donovan, stranger things, crazy ex girlfriend, stumptown, black sails, mr robot, she-ra, brooklyn 99, the league of legends cartoon, and currently: star trek lower decks

edit: note that these aren't necessarily shows with 0 LGBT characters or relationships (other than The Witcher) just that they were recommended to me as being "very queer" and completely failed to live up to that endorsement

I can't think of a less queer show than the toddler copaganda of brooklyn 99. i swear to god we're so starved for meaningful queerness people will say anything is queer. the steam deck with OLED screen? queer. that concrete embankment? queer

ugh, brooklyn 99. even before 2020, "you should watch b99, you'll love it" felt like an insult.

I have slowly realized that when I say "I want queer stories" I mean "I want main characters who are queer, whose queerness is an inextricable facet of their stories, and who are part of a broader queer landscape" and when people recommend me queer narratives, they mean one or some of the following things:

  • there is a visibly queer background or supporting character
  • there is a main character who at one point mentions a same-sex attraction or past relationship
  • the main characters are shippable
  • (2010 onward) maybe, maybe a chaste lil same-sex smooch in the very last episode

luckily I live in a world of surpassing LGBT+ richness, where people (like you! hi!) will go to extraordinary effort to put queer stories by queer artists in front of an audience, and I don't need mainstream properties to recognize me as part of their market share. in some ways maybe it's even better to be so thoroughly Not Suitable For All Audiences.

yet I still do resent the money hose for not catering to me. we are all of us flawed.
