as far as I can tell Stephenie Meyer was patient zero for this, before Twilight the floral scent associated with a certain type of romance protagonist was gardenias, but at some point people realized that White Shoulders perfume your grandma loved was gardenia-scented and at that exact moment, freesia was ready to step into its place. it's 2024 and when a writer needs to reach for a feminine, floral scent descriptor, freesia is right there.
anyway the reason I bring it up is because I worked at a garden center for 6 years and it is time to lay down this burden: freesias smell like froot loops. exactly that dusty artificial kinda-fruity-but-also-extruded-grain-byproducts smell of a box of slightly stale froot loops.
