Having been raised atheist in a majority atheist country, it's difficult to relate to organized religion. Like I already do so many things in my life that I feel overwhelmed and pressed for time. I'd have to go really out of my way to learn a bunch of lore, new traditions, and attend more events, for an unclear motivation.

I'm finding my personal experience around the culture is shaped by how deeply theistic the people telling it are.

That said, the actual belief in haShem matters so little that I've come across in-jokes about Atheism being the most Jewish religion. (Buddhism comes in 2nd). Like, there's literally a Humanist off-branch, with about 10,000 followers. One of their main stances is outright refusal to practice theism.

They're still recognized to the point of being entitled to 'right of return'.

Not to deny the existence of worship itself, just saying it's not the only game in town. But the real important part here is the -culture-.

That said, there IS such a thing as "Jewish by choice". Like, that's literally the point of conversion. Ask around if/when you attend that service, see what they say. :3
