Anyway I seem to recall hearing / seeing / reading somewhere that Big Tech is basically all-in on Artificial Intelligence because they've got literally nothing else to bank on. There's no new bubbles blowing up, so A.I. has to be The Big One or else all the venture capital money dries up and the Tech Bubble bursts.

Again.

This is just my opinion based on my observation, but I think we're witnessing a tech bro apocalypse.

In the year of our lord 2023 we've just about invented every useful technology that we need on a day-to-day basis, and until researchers figure out how to rebuild limbs or some shit, we really don't need anything beyond the tech that we already have.

But nooo we don't have flying cars and robot escorts (shit we don't need, let's be honest), so it's the Tech Bro's obligation to "launch us into the future" Doge Coin, NFTs, AI - all of these have been artificially pushed in the name of ✨innovation✨ when it serves no actual utility in our day-to-day lives. Smartphones have utility. Digital art software serves utility.

We don't need AI, we don't need $3,499 AR glasses, we don't need Metaverses, We don't need NFTs. I can't see any of this new technology as anything other than an attempt to get rich quick and jingle keys in front of venture capitalists who watched Black Mirror and completely missed the point.

It's so funny seeing techbros Cope & Seethe™, but it's also sad. A lot of these people who bought into the grift (my dad almost fell into this mindset as well) are usually nine-to-fivers who don't have any aspirations beyond not being a nine-to-fiver. They larp as a big shot and think that if they suck a CEO's dick hard enough, they'll get their foot in the door of opportunity. Their desperation blinds them. They confuse delusion for optimism and don't have the emotional maturity to step back and think, "Maybe this ape shit isn't the best move"

Yeah some vcs have said the same (tech bubble is about to burst and we dont even know what the point of this kind of ai even is.)

Sadly the limb thing is being worked on, that is what muskrat's neuralink is supposed to do but all we know of it so far is that it killed a bunch of monkeys.

i feel the same way, stuck between "it's sad that a lot of innocent people are going to get burned" and "maybe if enough people get burned we as a society will finally stop putting our faith in tech and finance"

We can only hope, but we also need to be prepared to write those folks off as lost. No social movement of value could be sustained by the fires burning inside irate faux petite-bourgeoisie, angry that their conspicuous consumption didn't pay off by making them the Masters. They'd have to learn a lesson, in addition to correctly identifying that they were cheated. Most of these dudes still don't get that it was always a grift, that they were never going to make it, and that the system which incentivizes them to engage with these scams is the issue, not just that the scam didn't work for them.

Yeah I think we're basically seeing the peak of Wall Street bullshit leaking into every single industry, it's why every entertainment industry is either striking or preparing to strike. Wall Street functions on make believe and theoretical money and tech is SO UNBELIEVABLY RIPE for that kind of speculative growth. I mean, I guess everyone knows that it started happening ages ago but I agree that this is basically the Tech Promise Apocalypse.

I think there's a lot of good on-paper use for genuine AI. But none of this stuff is proper AI, it's just a smarter version of the same predictive generation that's been used for chat bots for like 15 years, but now with mountains of plagiarism. And you're right that prosthetics and posthumanism-kinda stuff would be a much more obvious Genuinely Useful application, but Musk is already trying that with Neuralink and... Well, he's obviously going to fuck it up, he's inept and the stock market destroys everything it touches.

I think that's the bottom line in all this, is that any idea - whether it's something completely worthless like NFTs, or has potential but This Ain't It like AI - will just inherently be fucked up by catering to investors, and generally by profit motive as a whole. We've made a world where, if something takes more labour than a single small group, you need to suck up to the most morally deprived people on the planet.
