It isn’t just a drift towards irreligion, but a fundamental restructuring of the Christian denominational landscape. At least within the United States and Canada. I’m not Christian but this is really interesting to see play out.

i think it's definitely at least partially just the classic homophobia, but i think the other part is just that i think it's very easy to align christianity with fascism. fascism is generally more easy to stoke up when those in power are jumpy, and generally... i think people in power are very jumpy right now. targeting the marginalized is a classic maneuver from a group in power seeking to maintain that power, that's pretty straightforward.

what i DO think is novel here is that second part you bring up -- the fact that all the inherent contradictions of christianity are being strained right now and the function of churches as businesses or even community spaces means they have to be responsive to their denominations -- even those they've lost. so there's just a weird situation going on that all exacerbates the "political wedge" nature of gay people in religion.

where does this go from here? idk. probably more weird splits
