The name “Taranas” me of the place name Taranaki, which is composed of the Māori words tara (“mountain”) and naki (possibly “clear of vegetation”). For me, Taranos invokes an image of a mountainous expanse, cold like the slopes and summit of Mount Taranaki.
Thanks to a bunch of Celtic neopagan research I’ve done, the name “Taranas” also invokes the Celtic god Taranis (or Taranos). The deity’s name is derived from reconstructed Proto-Celtic Toranos (“thunder”). This implies that Taranos is a deity associated with thunder and storms more generally. The deity is also associated with wheels and cycles more generally, perhaps in reference to the seasons, trade by wheeled cart, or the “circle of life”.
Perhaps an inhospitable place of mountains and storms, where the harsh winds prevent anything larger than a shrub to flourish. And where despite how harsh it is, the slopes of these mountains are home to a well-travelled people who trade wondrous items for more mundane goods and services. A place like Lukla, Nepal or La Rinconda, Peru with a fantasy spin.
Is a good name :3
