Kissing girls is a mitzvah :3

Each country does their MiG-29 modernizations in a slightly different way, which makes for a wide variety of upgraded variants. It's especially interesting that the MiG bureau was an active in almost all of these modernization programs despite being NATO fighters.

When Slovakia transferred its entire MiG-29SA fleet to Ukraine between 2022 and 2023, the Slovak Air Force found itself without any fighter jets to patrol their airspace. To accommodate this transition, several NATO allies are providing coverage until Slovakia receives its the F-16s it already planned to replace the MiG-29SAs with. A pretty sweet deal!

This arrangement foreshadows a potential future NATO-wide single airspace where countries cooperatively patrol each other skies. Who knows what the future holds for Europe.

Delivery of Slovakia's first F-16s

On 29 September 2023, Slovakia's first F-16 Block 70 fighter (no. 1001) was flight tested at Lockheed Martin’s production facility in Greenville, South Carolina.

On 11 January 2024, Slovakia received its first two F-16 Block 70 fighter jets (no. 1001 and 1101), putting Slovakian Air Force back in business. Once the first "ferry cell" arrives in Slovakia later this year, the airspace policing arrangement will come to a close. Deliveries of these aircraft to Slovakia are set to continue through 2025.

It's a shame to see Slovakia's MiG-29SA fleet go, but times are changing. May they serve Ukraine well.
