the knee-jerk liberal reaction to the idea of a socialist state is always very funny because they will say things like "but when you go to the store you won't have 30237523423 different brands of identical food to choose between AND they'll assign you a job" to which my autistic ass is like

What's funny is that we used to have the Civilian Conservation Corps, which while not an assigned job per se, was large-scale government-provided employment.

Indeed, there used to be multiple things through the new deal (CCC was new deal, like the WPA) and great society and such, Keynsian wealth transfer programs (which had the notable problem of preserving and increasing the racial segregation and wealth gap and violence in the USA, despite the good parts). During WWII the WPA would in fact assign you a job much like the army would, though with the amount of people going overseas fighting they more begged for somebody to fill the jobs they needed to assign to someone, and offered lavish wages to entice people.
