Windows games run better via Proton on Linux than just... in Windows.

The only major exceptions are when the publisher wants to rootkit your computer. I would argue games not running because they require a rootkit is a feature, not a bug.

Oh I am dead fucking serious about that last bit too. Do you know how many video games are out there? Do you realize how much choice is possible for what video game you can play at any given moment? Free, paid, pirated, old, new, single player, multi player. There is zero reason to have any obligation to a video game that requires any kind of player adverse bullshit in it. Gambling, rootkits, FOMO bait, even just ones sold by companies you don't like. You can just, play something different!

If all of your friends play the same rootkit game, idk, maybe suggest you all try something new?

would you happen to know if this is true of weird little indie games? one of my hesitations for switching has always been that i want to be able to be confident that whatever under-10-review thing i find on steam will just work for me, but if proton really just does the trick for everything except AAA rootkit nonsense...

Last couple of times I've tried it, pretty sure the games have been Unity or whatever so they've ran fine.

On steam you can always see if the little steam deck support thing has been ticked or not. That's just a linux PC after all.

YMMV tho
