amelyssan

in the pocket of Big Gay

i talk about music, and i also make the music. amateur composer and producer with stars in her eyes

today, it is time to start working again on that second EP, which is definitely gonna be a little in the jazz fusion flavor because that's what i've been eating, and there's some good eating to be found out there

so here's some inspo, mostly of the well-known variety but just a little bit not so well-known:

bill bruford's earthworks | making a song and dance

one may know bill bruford from his role in king crimson's Discipline era, but he's had a pretty damn broad career. as a child i really enjoyed the debut album of earthworks, with the extremely of-its-era digital drums and synths, and it still holds up strong today. this song flirts hard with modal jazz, really drinking deep of each harmony it passes through

weather report | harlequin

what can possibly be said about weather report that hasn't already been said? this track is possibly my favorite from the album Heavy Weather. the slower feeling of the track, the simultaneously bebop-touched and bluesy chord changes and melodies but with the cool altered tones you see in pretty much anything wayne shorter touches, it's all magical. also rest in piece wayne

hiromi's sonicbloom | ue wo muite aruko

i remember when this album dropped, and damn. all virtuosity aside, the reharmonization chops here are wild and taught me a lot about what adapting an existing song can look like. the playing is so joyful and i hope i can embody that joy, even just a bit

snarky puppy | lingus

the swing. the stank. beyonce in flawless going goddamn goddamn godDAMN is how i feel listening to snarky puppy (not to be confused with skinny puppy, who will melt your face for other reasons). snarky puppy brings the funk and keeps it strong. the drumming is so deep in the pocket that it carries everything forward. the ensemble follows the drums perfectly and with it arises flow, and with flow comes music

knower | time traveler

yes, you know knower was coming up. you knew louis cole was gonna be there from the start. i love their commitment to cheap instruments and home recording. i love the intense, tight rhythms combined with silky smooth lyricism. i love it all and idk what more i can say
