The Super Nintendo could use palettes that selected from colors with 5 bits per channel, leading to a total of 32768 colors it could select from for its palettes. The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive could use palettes that selected from colors with 3 bits per channel, leading to a total of 512 colors it could select from for its palettes.

Yeah, and my understanding is the CD-i can do 16-bit or 24-bit true colour, so I guess that explains the much more detailed image on the right. I usually see stuff using 256 colour mode though
