and, you know, i feel like it just bears intensifying: my contempt for this behavior is immense. sure, this channel is probably bullshit, but like what if it wasn't.. people would still do this, they'd still show up to one guy doing what he spent years learning to do and say "where's baumgartner crew." that's such a massive fucking dick move that i just can't believe people don't know it's rude. why say this? what is the point? what possible value could it have other than to be insulting? and i've seen it plenty on videos that are not clearly clickbait nonsense. the way people regard celebrity just fucking sucks. having entire topics reduced down to a "oh you're doing what [name] does" in passing is just one of the biggest dick moves in history.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMeXHUB5TM0 case in point - here's one of the very, very few other people doing this on YT. comments are full of baumgartner. why would you think this guy wants to hear you talk about fucking baumgartner.

this in particular is one of the most insufferable behaviors on the whole website. it's like having 20 people walk into your house, turn their backs to you, and all start hooting about how they just left brad's and start telling in-jokes about brad's place. nobody would do that. comments sections make peoples brains turn into sewage.

I generally trust Baumgartner's skill since he has a very consistent process and explains any time he diverges from it. It looks like he often has dozens of restorations in progress since there's a lot of wait time as well, which could explain how frequently he's able to upload. But he also for sure calibrates his videos toward a casual audience, especially with his calm voiceovers, classical music timelapses, etc.
It seems like there's at least some contingent of more engaged viewers though - in a recent video he posited some Questionable opinions about orientalism in 19th century European art, and rightly received pushback from a bunch of commenters.

This is weird to read because I watch Baumgartner sometimes and it sort of felt like... more of a TV show than a YouTuber? Like I never expect to make any kind of fandom connection or share strong opinions about some fluff late-night show like World's Biggest Container Ships. He's in that category for me so it's very weird to think of him as someone who's either loved or hated.

same as the damn "primitive construction!!" channels in terms of there's like one actually doing the thing and the rest are.... suspect :|
