tldr: for a kids film it's excellent. for someone older, it'll be hit-or-miss depending on how well you can tolerate kid-centric stuff. about what you expected probably lol

i'm too old for this shit man lmao. my assumption was that with nintendo watching over illumination closely during production the movie wouldn't suffer from the "illuminationisms" of their usual productions. well, i was wrong. partially anyway lol.

i feel the movie also suffered from pacing issues, not in the "they introduce a lot and don't explain it" way, but in the "they introduce a lot and never do anything with it" way. ironically it feels like the writers recognized that the typical "save the princessluigi" storyline of the games was too simple so they tried to pad it out with other mario stuff (like the karts), except it feels like they padded it too much lol.

pratt-io was def the worst performance, but not in the "conventional" way. in the first scene he was in he actually carried the martinet falsetto decently. for reasons i won't spoil though he just Never does this again throughout the whole movie which astounded me. the "conventionally" worst performance i feel actually goes to peach. i dunno what else anya taylor-joy has starred in and i'm sure she's a good live-action actress, but she just didn't have the voice for peach tbh. it felt like her voice had a short pitch range relative to what her lines required so some of the reads felt a little dry. idk

aside from all that though, it was a fun movie. for every reference that felt Glaring they snuck in something subtle. really good eye candy all around. if this sets things up in much the same way the sonic movie set up for its sequel, then i think i'll be pleasantly surprised for whenever the next one comes around
