an incredibly untapped retro throwback aesthetic is the early redbook audio soundtrack (sega cd, playstation) where every time music changes, it’s sudden & has a brief pause while it seeks to the next track, often with a subtle build to the start because you can do that with pre-recorded music now. for bonus aesthetic points, add in a little ambience of a cd rom drive spinning up any time it changes tracks.

i have very specific memories about this for games where short jingles would also be cd tracks, so you really got to understand the mechanism making the music go

Joymasher modeled the music of Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider after Sega CD or Turbo-CD audio. They didn't go as far as making the game pause to seek the next track, but they did use a spinning CD image whenever a new stage was loading.

I have seen someone who was making an early FMV-inspired adventure game who deliberately recreated the video compression artifacts for whenever scenes change, so the music aesthetic doesn't seem that far off.
