The woman is baffled by the suit's request.
"I painted this. It's my painting."
"And yet you rented the canvas." The man in the doorway insists. "That was not made by your hands."
"...was it made by yours?" She accuses.
"By my money, yes."
"Your money is yours. This canvas was made for a pittance for your poor employee, and its art belongs to me. The painting cannot be separated from its canvas."
"Then get a knife or pay me for the canvas."
He doesn't seem like the man to know how to use a knife. He has people for that.
"I already paid for the canvas once."
"But you continue to reap value from my canvas. Don't I deserve compensation?"
She can't hold back a laugh.
"It's my art that is valuable. Who buys art for the canvas?"
"You did." He smiles like he's claiming checkmate in checkers.
"I- a blank canvas isn't art."
"No, it's better! A blank canvas is an office to rent. The business that occurs in there should, too, benefit the owner of the building, no?."
She glances to her studio behind her. "I- I work from home."
"You don't work." He accuses. "You purchase. You paint. You take my money from others who haven't figured out they can get canvas cheaper elsewhere."
"Do you... understand what art is?"
"Lines and figures, yeah? I'm good at those."
"I don't actually think you are."
