Modern day big budget IP-driven blockbusters remind me of the zombie years of The Simpsons. The characters were established over a decade ago and their original creators did pretty much everything you can do with them the first go around. Creators have to do something new with them but can't go too far or it'll feel like a different property with different characters. Plus, the decade and change of difference means that the gulf in cultural beliefs and standard from the time of their creation until now is only growing, but enough of the culture at the time of creation is baked into the property that it'll never fully come out no matter what the writers or directors do.
