nobody talks about it, but it's still the case that VR has a smell. it's not as intense a smell as it used to be, but it's still there

No, it's a specific type of foam rubber plus molded plastic. The headset has a smell
Ah, the out-gassing smell of a headset, particularly the facial interface.
Yeah, different headsets have subtly different sets of out-gassing smells. Usually it gets masked by sweat though unless you replace or cover that cheap foam they used as an interface material on several headsets.
And whatever it is, you know it must be bad for you if the headset is still out-gassing after a decade.
