The shitty photo of him with the ear bandage absolutely undid any "cool" from his immediate photo.
I think it's also the case that the only people who actually care that he got shot are MAGA diehards. Nobody's being converted by this
My theory is there's enough background radiation of victim-blaming in his crowd that any attack against him is perceived as a failure on his part.
"I prefer presidents that don't get shot" has been a joke but accurately reflects the mentality of his base on some level, though of course not in simplest terms.
