back when your multiplayer game was a big freakin deal not because it beat out all the other multiplayer games, but because it was one of the multiplayer games. all on closed, proprietary networks. so different from today

Fair enough.

We only had a C64 in '90, and no modem for it, so multiplayer was either hotseat or plugging in a second joystick if the game supported it.

Though I do recall a rare few games where you could use a null modem cable for head-to-head, though I never actually used that feature.

It was somewhere between '90 and '92 that I used a computer for the first time, and we didn't have any kind of online service until '95 or '96 when the local phone company started offering ISP services in our area.

So not too familiar with online life in the 80s/early 90s.
