I first encountered the line "If you're squeamish, don't prod the beach rubble" in the game Sam and Max Hit The Road and thought of it as a classic Sam and Max line for years until I discovered it was actually written by Sappho of Lesbos, circa 570 BCE.
Maybe this is true of other classic Sam & Max lines, as well. Has anyone checked if Sappho of Lesbos said "I'd be peeing my pants if I wore any"
I went to fact check this, and the short answer is it's true, and the long answer is that translators have embellished a very short fragment quite a bit and I am starting to have OPINIONS about it
okay another translation says "stir not the pebbles," which is more poetic but less immediately relatable
this caused me to Google "did ancient Greece have pants" and the answer is that trousers had been invented and they were aware of them, but Greeks never wore pants because pants are for foreign barbarians, not people of culture
