thought of a principle the other day that we've all been unconsciously following: "the devil you don't know"

we all swore off Hobby Lobby, but we keep going to Michaels and Joann - not because we really think those corps are run by decent people, but because they haven't shown themselves to be monsters.

we know they probably are. statistically, it's more likely than not that our money is going into funds to outlaw queerness and not being white - but we haven't seen evidence that Michaels is smuggling religious artifacts to pay for a holy war, so we can plausibly believe we aren't contributing to our own destruction. so for our glitter and mod podge needs, we go with the devil we don't (yet) know.

i always have to hold back a rant about this every time someone goes "oh but i bet every other chocolate maker cuts off child slaves' hands / every other logistics service electrocutes drivers' nipples if they try to stop for a piss so i'm just going to keep using the one that provably, on-record does that".

there should be no consequences for getting caught, not even the pathetic unpunishment of "some people stop buying their products", because probably someone else is also bad but hasn't been caught yet. fuck you.

Kind of similar concept to the whole "no ethical consumption under capitalism" thing, innit? At least I've always considered this to be part of that. The way things are set up to reward awful behavior and grant the rich the freedom to do as they please, inevitably everything you do is gonna be benefiting one of those people.

I've thought about this in relation to some rich people being able or unable to just shut up. If they could, mostly we could ignore the billionaires, but many of them just can stop showing how terrible they are.
