and so you see that to say "liking pirates is problematic because they were thieves" is to miss the greater picture that pirates were people who successfully opted out of a repressive society and built a democratic one in its margins
it's true some of the funding sources for the project were problematic, but
I like pirates because I'm gay, resent authority, have a prominent facial scar, and am good at training parrots, and society used to have a niche for this extremely specific set of attributes
