that's pretty much the thesis. you don't need to keep reading. it's nothing but depressing shit that won't help anyone. i'm sorry you saw this post but if you don't click read now, you can minimize the harm.
I was thinking about this yesterday, but I think the last one for me was the 3DS, and the Evo 3D, and that in itself reveals something depressing, I think.
Here we have a genuinely novel kind of display, fucking sci-fi future tech shit and it just ... went nowhere but one game console and a couple of smartphones no one could buy, and a camera no one did either.
And we even invented cameras to go with it, so you could make your own 3D.
It's dead now. The Evo died like 10 years ago, the 3DS just got put in the ground.
Sure they had their limitations, but they weren't enough to stop the 3DS becoming one of the best selling game devices in history, and normally that's the kind of thing that merits further investigation and improvement ... but it just didn't happen.
And why didn't it happen? Because the money in 3D was chasing Stupid Fucking Shit That No One Wanted, because it was cheaper and easier and showier. Instead we got the debacle that was 3D TV, even though it was patently obvious to everyone not techbrain poisoned that no one wants to have to wear stupid shit on their face just to watch TV.
Philips apparently did actually make big-screen glasses-free 3D, but by then the bottom had fallen out of the market and everyone moved on to "Smart" and "4K" as the new bullshit feature, so they sold it off to some ex-employees.
And speaking of Philips selling shit off, did you know they sold off their entire consumer products range? Anything you see with the Philips name now is just some random Chinese OEM that licensed the rights to the name. They don't even distribute them anymore.
If there's not the proof of your thesis, I dunno what is.
And of course also, maybe a reason for that is because we sold all our manufacturing capacity to China decades ago and now you can't move in the hardware or consumer product spaces, because anything you come up with will have knockoffs in a week. Your Chinese OEM will sell the tooling to their buddies and a dozen factories in Shenzen will be cranking them out cheaper and faster and with more volume, because that's what happens when you throw all the money in the world at a place and tell it to get really good at building things. Same thing as happened in Japan before that.
There's basically no money in consumer products for Western companies, unless you can find some way to tie it into A Platform or An Ecosystem, and treat the hardware as the loss leader for the real product, which is usually a media or software market. And the only reason that doesn't collapse for the same reason is a combination of aggressive legal bullying and copy protection schemes.
It's why they're all fucking obsessed with "Intellectual Property", because it's the only thing they can make anymore ... and why they're trying to convince us all a computer can make better art than a human, because as soon as they can manage they wanna automate IP and sell it to sweatshops overseas too.
They literally only have one playbook, and they're floundering because it's not fucking working this time, because they've forgotten that regular humans still have souls.
