i swear to god multiple people have suggested that the only reason i would write a post that sounds mad is because i'm Farming Engagement™, on this, the website notable for minimally tracking engagement. no one has continued the train of thought to anywhere sensible but i guess the idea is that i love to be yelled at by people i've never seen before

i cannot even begin to guess what could be going on in someone's brain that i need to explain this, but my reason for writing a post that sounds mad is usually that i am mad. i know it's not cool to admit this if you grew up on somethingawful, but from time to time i do experience human emotion in response to stimuli

you can just think my post sucks or whatever. you don't need to fabricate extra motivations to give yourself an excuse to dislike me. jfc

in reply to @lexyeevee's post:

struggling to grasp this implied worldview where randos making posts must be constantly scrutinized lest they trick you into giving them undeserved pageviews, but buying disney products is so completely normal that it is beyond question in any context

there is a full combinatoric punnett square of people who do or don't think piracy is praxis and are or aren't mad that anyone suggested that they might not die instantly if deprived of live action disney remakes

When I first read your original post, I disliked it, but then I re-read it again and I realised that I had originally misread it and that I agreed with you. It sucks that so many people are not making any effort to read you in good faith. I thought Cohost would be a place where people would be better than that, and it largely is, but apparently not as much as I would have liked. I guess this is not a problem that is entirely the faults of algorithm. Anyway, thank you for your thread, for your chost in general, and I hope tomorrow will be better than today for you. (that's a weird thing to say, but I didn't want to say "have a good day" since it probably wasn't.)

at some point on a classical forum (possibly SA, this was something like 2010) the thing that drove me out of trying to have reasonable conversations about fucking comic books was when people started trying to analyze my motivations for disagreeing with them. I couldn’t possibly just, you know, have an opinion about how a series ended that was contrary to someone else’s, I had to be arguing about this thing in bad faith because I wanted Forum Clout or something

this also happened in the comments of a chost a couple months ago and I made a person very mad when I said I was no longer interested in having a discussion with them. the brain worms are everywhere

oh my god that doesn't even make any fucking sense — you'd only get clout if a bunch of other people felt the same way!! so why is ut inconceivable for you to feel that way!

there was someone in the comments of my post who was like "this feels like making up a guy to get mad at" and didn't believe anyone actually thought piracy was praxis. i showed them the very recent instance where i'd seen it and mentioned it as a pattern, and someone else chimed in with further examples like the hp game, and they kept... casually describing it as being a thing only one person believes. then they told me i'd deliberately misunderstood all their posts and was now tone policing them. i felt like i was losing my fucking mind

if I’m remembering the right forum, I was one of a group of posters that could be described as Those Guys With An Avatar That’s A Black & White Photo Of A Dead 20th Century Author, and somehow this not only led to us all being mistaken for each other, but people thinking we were part of some kind of clique that existed to look down on everybody else, and therefore I must be arguing to protect my reputation as A Kind Of Poster blah blah blah it was all incredibly stupid

and the “piracy is praxis” thing is all over Tumblr right now, especially after HBO starting taking shows offline and fucking over the creators, etc. there’s a whole generation that grew up on Netflix and functional streaming services and bittorrent looks like black magic to them, so I’m not all that surprised that it feels like a secret weapon against capitalism? they are, of course, just wrong, but that’s par for the course on Tumblr and the idea that you are having to make something up is just absurd

the argument brainworms allow someone to just shift gears completely from “you made up a person to be angry at” to “you deliberately misrepresented what I said”, because consistency is not the goal. winning the argument is the goal. it’s absolutely in line with the classic Sartre quote about anti-semites (not that these people are anti-semites, it’s just a method of argument) or “The Card Says Moops”

Sorry to hear that, especially sucks that it's happening on this lovely site. Hope that these type of users stop the toxicity towards you and also scamper back to whence they came.
