This is where I find that trackpad gesture that zooms in similarly to how phones zoom in to webpages really helpful. However this does not apply to desktops without touchpads so. :(
Plenty of sites ruin pinch-zooming as well, notably Google images, which is infuriating.
I don't use Reddit, but I keep having to open image in new tab on cohost on my phone, because clicking them in a chost doesn't make them any bigger (and sometimes doesn't show them at all, if there's a lot of alt text), and it's kinda frustrating!
