okay okay been doing some of my own digging and just wanna quickly share some links and resources! trying to keep documentation loose and low-pressure bc otherwise i end up never doing it hehehe

Super GBCrawler by Fernanda Shimada/ @jojoruteon ! alt text

@jojoruteon made a 3D maze editor for Game Boy Studio! It comes with all kinds of great features (compass HUD for players, pre-made visual assets, GREAT documentation). I haven't fiddled around with it yet but I'm hoping to make some fun examples for the students in the next couple weeks.

Gameboy Raycasting System by Haroldo Pinheiro ! alt text

Haroldo Pinheiro made an experimental homebrew rom that implements a raycasting algorithm for a "3d" effect, here's video of it in action! I haven't looked through the github repo but it's such a fun example of how technical restraints/limitations can inform code and game design. You can see in the video that the framerate is a bit clunky and slow, showing the Game Boy's limitations and posing some interesting design questions for game developers to consider.

Wolfenstein 3D โ€“ Gameboy Color On custom cartridge with co-processor by Anders Granlund ! alt text Fantastic documentation on a home-brewed Wolfenstein game for the Gameboy Color, complete with custom cartridge! Unlike some of the other examples, this project shows how hardware limitations inform software design. As we've seen in the previous example, a reactive FPS is incredibly tricky to run on a conventional GB or GBC cartridge. This modder takes it up a notch by modifying the physical gameboy cartridge.

there's a bit more i'm still sorting through but v excited with these examples so far!
