it is noble for an art to be so manifestly perfect that it stands on its own for all time and never needs a remake or modernization. think Citizen Kane, or Portal, or The Wire. this recognizes the ageless magnificence of the original art

it is also noble for an art to be so manifestly perfect that it spawns a deluge of endless remakes that reimagine it through every possible angle. think Mobile Suit Gundam, or Star Trek, or Macbeth. this recognizes the endless depth of the original art

what is ignoble is to remake a perfect art just once or twice. this disrespects the art by suggesting that it is unsuitable for modern tastes while also refusing to grant it the dignity of bountiful offspring. this is the true sin

Yeah. I feel like the question is - is the intent to replace the original work? Or is the intent to draw out something from the original work that wasn't there before, or to do something new with it?

Because in the game industry especially, remakes seem to be about simply replacing the original work because it's not suitable anymore. (Those recent FF pixel remasters stick out to me - not that they originals were dated, but that they weren't On Brand as being one specific brand style. The need to recreate the works was to create a more digestible uniform style in order to support the intended story of what Final Fantasy was.)
