Thing is someone like Getty or Shutterstock might actually be in a position to do this properly — they have a huge training set, contact details for the creators, an existing process to pay them, and a use case that generation makes sense for. If they put the effort in, they could make a genuinely useful and ethical AI image generation service. But I just know without having to check they they haven't done that.
I mean Shutterstock still routinely steals photos from Wikimedia without credit, like constantly. Also they seem to have just contracted direct from OpenAI so it's not clear they had anything to do with the model they're using.
