There's also the factor of having vacation days on paper but not being able to take them - in the US this is rampant, in other countries it's apparently a lot less common.
Too many jobs where you can go on vacation if there's staff available to cover the days you'll miss... and there isn't, ever.
I have been told people will be psychologically battered by both their managers AND their co-workers for having the audacity to take a day off by people with way shitter jobs than mine. Nothing like good old peer pressure to make people hate themselves for getting sick.
Sweden will deport you if you don't take enough vacation days during your work visa.
