I think I've asked this before, but I'll ask again before we run out of chances.

I know there's some folks here who've done it, so I want to ask: how do I get out of tech?
I don't think I want to be a developer anymore.

There's a chance my current employment might be ending very shortly, at which point I will need to find new work but ... I dunno where to start, what avenues might be open to someone with a technical background but increasingly little will to do dev work.

This job has been the most stressful of my entire career, and underpaid at that, and the industry itself seems to be spiraling a drain.

I have ten years of dev experience, I'm a damn good writer, a good speaker, OK game designer, even a trained actor, but I've struggled to find any way to turn any of these things into money besides cranking out code.

Thing is, I'm disabled and I've got a nasty case of long covid that shows no signs of improving, and physically I dunno how much longer I can do this work. I'm struggling as it is, and it feels like I'm spending all my spoons on the job, and so I end up with nothing left over for me.

I just don't know what to do with myself that'll keep the lights on, and the cost of living keeps going up.

As of this moment I am now unemployed.

If anyone has need of a functional web developer, a writer, podcaster, game designer, etc. etc., or know someone who does, let me know.

Corporal Walter Eugene O'Reilly : Okay, sir, uh, you sign this top form, then initial all the rest.

Lt. Colonel Henry Blake : Initial, Radar?

Corporal Walter Eugene O'Reilly : Oh, yes, sir. Your initials signify that instead of signing, you initialed. Uh, then you have to sign this form, which states that you merely initialed the forms that required signing. Then after you've signed, you put your initial where you signed so that people will know that you okayed your signature with your initial.

Lt. Colonel Henry Blake : Radar, tell me the truth. Do you understand any of this?

Corporal Walter Eugene O'Reilly : Uh, I try not to, sir. It slows up the work.

@xkeeper

we could use a radio-style input for a simple "YES/NO", or perhaps a checkbox like "i have a separate mailing address"

but what if, instead, we used a shitty javascript reimplementation of a select/dropdown

that has INPUT LAG

i guarantee you this shit was a management demand

in fact, it's generally a pretty good bet that every bad feature you see on a modern web page comes from one of two places:

  1. management made a stupid request, despite the objections of the designer and the developer
  2. management didn't give them enough time to implement a thing properly, so they used some shitty library default that was like that because someone else's manager insisted they write it that way

i work daily on stupid bullshit that should not exist, because i'm queer and disabled and i don't have anything left i can do to not starve to death

none of us want to make crap like this, if we have any self-respect left

but it's do this garbage or get canned during an industry collapse

direct your ire to the managerial class, advocate for unionization, and never let any fucking CEO sleep another night until all are free
