Okay! this is my first sketch post here, I have a big writeup under the read more on what I was going for and where I'll go from here, suggestions and theorization are encouraged!

What I'm doing: so today I was mostly experimenting with drums and fitting them into more intuitive, kinetic music, my stuff tends a little bit more towards the heady or ambient than I would often like so I've been trying to improve at that. I'm also doing a bit of general vibe prototyping for a future project that's supposed to be like a mid tempo dancey breakbeaty thing.

What went right: I think I'm actually pretty happy with how the drums turned out, I feel like I learned some things about how to keep the rhythm simple while accentuating certain things that the melody is missing, for example the melody line here has a lot of emphasis on downbeats, so to keep it energetic there's a bunch of 16th note emphasis in the drums, I'm thinking if the melody were more syncopated I'd probably do less of that in the drums to make space for other things. Also guitar tone turned out pretty good I think! I definitely want to use more real guitar in my stuff

What's not working: So. I kinda completely missed the vibe I was going for, this is waaaay darker than I want it to be lol. I definitely want a little bit of darkness in the project I'm planning but this is too much. I can think of several things to work on here, the melody line has a ton of emphasis on the flat second and fourth scale degrees which is quite frankly overkill, and even though I do like the guitar tone, I think this project doesn't want a 7 string. Lastly, I don't think there's enough diversity of sounds in here, the two main melody sounds are actually more complicated than they come across but I want a bit more of an EDM feel and I think the next thing I might try is more sounds as like, rhythmic phrase enders?

ooo that's really cool! the two melody sounds are really interesting, and i think compositionally it works really well, even if it turned out a bit darker than you were going for. one thing which did stick out to me is that i feel like the drums could be a lot more prominent? especially the snare, i'm not sure if it's just a volume thing or maybe it needs a more noisy tail with more high end to help it stick out more but yeah. maybe not something to be too worried about at the stage of a sketch though

i may have gone a little overboard with experimenting with this and tried putting different drums on top of it, can send what it sounds like if you'd be interested but no worries if not ofc

just production thoughts! i can't really think of much to say about the composition

so here's what i came up with last night while trying putting different drums on it. it might be a bit too far in the other direction, but it definitely sounds more energetic to me (no pressure to do specifically this though! it's probably also partly a preference thing). the thing at the start is just bandpassed noise with a lot of reverb/delay and a flanger, i just tried adding it as it's like, a very edm-y thing to include. there's also a static bass synth i added, i'm not sure if i like it or not but i felt like having something more constant down there made it feel a bit 'fuller', but it also interferes with the bass already there a bit

first half is with different stuff i was playing around with, second half is original for comparison :3 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1n8K0bSseSmYLns_SLNvSIxmD9_gDWExS/view?usp=drive_link
