Okay! this is my first sketch post here, I have a big writeup under the read more on what I was going for and where I'll go from here, suggestions and theorization are encouraged!
What I'm doing: so today I was mostly experimenting with drums and fitting them into more intuitive, kinetic music, my stuff tends a little bit more towards the heady or ambient than I would often like so I've been trying to improve at that. I'm also doing a bit of general vibe prototyping for a future project that's supposed to be like a mid tempo dancey breakbeaty thing.
What went right: I think I'm actually pretty happy with how the drums turned out, I feel like I learned some things about how to keep the rhythm simple while accentuating certain things that the melody is missing, for example the melody line here has a lot of emphasis on downbeats, so to keep it energetic there's a bunch of 16th note emphasis in the drums, I'm thinking if the melody were more syncopated I'd probably do less of that in the drums to make space for other things. Also guitar tone turned out pretty good I think! I definitely want to use more real guitar in my stuff
What's not working: So. I kinda completely missed the vibe I was going for, this is waaaay darker than I want it to be lol. I definitely want a little bit of darkness in the project I'm planning but this is too much. I can think of several things to work on here, the melody line has a ton of emphasis on the flat second and fourth scale degrees which is quite frankly overkill, and even though I do like the guitar tone, I think this project doesn't want a 7 string. Lastly, I don't think there's enough diversity of sounds in here, the two main melody sounds are actually more complicated than they come across but I want a bit more of an EDM feel and I think the next thing I might try is more sounds as like, rhythmic phrase enders?
