on my sonic hedgedhog ds game marathon i am taking a short stop at kirby squeak squad :3

hot take alert, this is my second favorite kirby game! i know people think it's like "uninspired" or "ridiculously short" but for one, the squeak squad character designs are slam dunks and i love them and wish they stayed around forever. and yeah the game's p short but i honestly think what's there is the best version of great cave offensive, in part because of the puzzle difficulty to get the treasures and in part because the treasures themselves are super exciting.

upgrading your copy abilities and getting cosmetic rewards like kirby color palettes and different menu styles is so good. can you imagine how kick ass metroid would be if sometimes instead of an e tank you just got like, an optional color palette swap for your suit, or different colored missiles with no gameplay benefit, or customization options for your menus or scanner visor or whatever. squeak squad just feels extremely rewarding to play in a way that like, a shlooter for instance, can only dream of.

I was trying to marathon the Kirby games a while back and I think I was really getting burnt out somewhere in the middle of Magic Mirror, so when I got here I think my brain kinda struggled to switch rails because it's very similar in a lot of ways (quite a few reused assets; actually that's all I remember, there were probably other things lol) and I didn't enjoy it enough then to keep playing.

Returned to it more recently though and I really enjoyed it!

yeah that makes sense, it definitely stands on its own better when it isn't being played right in a row after a bunch of other kirby games lol. i think that even if squeak squad isn't the most unique game in the series, it's just executed really well, but if you're playing multiple games in a row you're probably looking for something way more unique than that!
