I really dislike tanking Diabolos Hollow because it requires very attentive healers in the second phase, and whoops, you died. Most other boss fights (I don't do extreme or savage) are less intense, and even with mitigation, I've yet to survive that one as a tank.

Just want to express that it's nice venting about something I find challenging in FFXIV and getting nothing but support. No unsolicited advice, no "git gud", no bad faith assumptions about how I'm playing.

@wobblegong has The Tea on it, but iirc, this is because of a few things:

  • Diabolos Hollow gets a shield which requires a certain amount of damage to break
  • While he has the shield, all of his attacks are guaranteed crits
  • ...but there's a rampant misconception that the shield, rather than breaking after a certain amount of damage, instead goes away "on its own," so a bunch of people will just hold DPS and idle around. Meanwhile, the tanks and healers are SUFFERING as they burn every resource trying to stay alive (and that's, as you said, assuming you've got healers who know what's up!)

It's from back in the day when you could say 'it's a stoneskin' and people would understand what you're saying, because players had a similar mechanic at the time.

That said, I need the danger to stay awake in alliance raids sometimes.

See you say that, but I've had like 3 runs of Orbonne that took it from some of my favorite content in the game to it being unbearable if people don't know what they're doing, but at least with sprouts they might actually listen to what to do instead of just ignoring you

Yep, Phosphor got it! Once upon a time tanks had Awareness to turn those crits off for a little bit, and if each tank took turns¹ that would probably pass enough time for the DPS to finish burning the green stoneskin of "tanks go to eeby deeby". Or nearly.

...we've been rezzing dead tanks on Diabolos Hollow since forever, too.

  1. This was, I will freely admit, a very big "if" even back then because nobody has wanted to rotate tanks in any content if they can help it since I started and I started in early HW. However, as people will still notice, Diabolos Hollow had some, shall we say, "enforced tank swaps" once a given tank's cooldowns ran out, so more than one on-content run involved tanks nervously finding Provoke on purpose.

Healing the MT also sucks because even if you are attentive sometimes the tank is not or the other healer is not or everybody's doing their best and shit just goes sideways anyway and it's a feel bad situation all around. I love when my party isn't responsible for at least that one part. 🥳

Can confirm from both healer and tank perspectives: the problem with Deeby Hullo isn't just that he hits like a truck but also often and in big chunks, so one healer panicking might not be enough if server ticks line up wrong.

Given how the fight's designed all six healers more or less should be babysitting the tank for that part of the fight– the raid outgoing damage right then is a joke unless someone walks face-first into a railing. But that's not the style of healing most of the game uses (the only other example I can think of is Cloud in WoD!) and also, it is 24man roulette, the roulette people least need to be conscious and capable for. Perfect set-up for several healers to be deep in Netflix or prepping the bong or whatever right when the tank is toe to toe with One Punch Man Demon.

Six healers pressing their faces up against the storefront windows, eyes shining with tears, as a montage of healing cooldowns that specify party member targets scroll past. Heartbreaking music plays over the death groan of the latest tank dying.
