VPX download page: Batman '66 Stern Tribute, by daphishbowl, Mr H, MPT3K, and Harlan
Batman '66 was an ambitious table when Stern made it, and it's an ambitious table to emulate in VPX. In addition to being Stern's first table with a high-resolution LCD display (they had to catch up with Jersey Jack), it also honors the spirit of the 1966 Batman TV series by packing the table full of physical toys and gadgets, including bringing back the crane from Batman: The Dark Knight (2008).
The table is officially named "Batman (66 Premium)" but there was never a simplified "Pro" edition. You cannot remove gadgets from Batman '66. And all of these physical interactions have to be modeled correctly in the VPX table.
The rules of Batman '66 are unapproachably complex. You have to have memorized a guide to the game to get any kind of decent score on it, and you have to make a lot of accurate shots. Normally I would find that really off-putting, but the nice thing about Batman '66 is that even when you're playing the table badly, as almost everyone will, fun things happen on it, and they're also fun for onlookers to watch.
Everything is as colorful and silly and precisely labeled as you would expect from a table based on the original Batman TV show.
This reimplementation by Daphishbowl (and many other contributors) is not running Stern's code. Every interaction between the mechanisms of the table and the code, and everything that happens on the display, had to be reimplemented from scratch. It works. If it were getting the rules slightly wrong, I wouldn't know, but I don't think anyone saw any discrepancies. It's very impressive.
The display requires janky PinUP Player setup, but it looks right and it scales to different display sizes without complaint.
I'll nitpick that the physics feel slightly unreal, as if the pinball is lighter than it should be. It's not really detrimental to gameplay, but it was noticeable when I played it right after Bord's recreation of Batman: The Dark Knight.
