oh cool, the Guix community is debating their cozy relationship with Software Heritage

oh no, all the replies are missing the point

oh huh. I'm going to need some time to get up to speed with this aspect of the issue, particularly because so far I don't know what Guix is. A package manager, I guess?

You say all the replies are missing the point, but this early one by Ian Eure seems to identify most of the current AI-training problem with the Software Heritage Archive.

To catch up with the Software Heritage situation from my point of view:

  • Their deadnaming situation went from a "burn these transphobes to the ground" situation to a "meh" situation. I don't think we ever got the clear name change process we wanted in the archive, but at least they stopped digging in and fighting trans people from what I can tell. They did the takedowns I asked for of copies of my code that call me by my deadname.

  • But meanwhile, they are selling all the code they've collected to HuggingFace, an AI company. You can report their illegal and immoral use of the code if you want, but it's like calling the cops on the cops. The report against HuggingFace goes to HuggingFace, who leaves it there and doesn't act on it.

I'm glad that the Guix community, whatever it is, has noticed this part of the situation. It seems I would have a lot of reading to do to understand what they're doing or not doing about it. Anonymous asker, could you provide me more details?
