Posted one of those "too long/hot for Twitter" takes on bsky, but since folks here are also likely interested, I'll copy-paste them here too, why the fuck not

There’s a certain retro interview(s) going around that a lot of people seem to love but I find to be a prime example of how bad most media interviews have gotten. I loathe the story-fication of interviews because it takes focus away from the most important thing: the interviewee

If half your interview is editorializing and clarification then it’s a fucking lousy interview IMO. Your editorial should be minimal, your job is to ask questions and lead the interviewee to great insights and responses and that’s the only shred of “you” that should be in the piece

Every time I’ve been made to transition an interview I’ve conducted from a straight Q-and-A piece into a “story” I’ve hated it. HATED it. It robs the subjects of their authentic voice and replaces it with mine, which I feel does them dirty. I feel very strongly about this.

Most of the interview is boring window-dressing with little of substance, which tends to happen a lot with an email interview... but saying it's a new standard? lolololol

Strangely, I've had the opposite experience, in that editors were reluctant to accept pitches in general unless you had at least one interview attached to them. Needless to say, this automatically disqualified any genre of writing for which interviews are irrelevant.

nvm, just realised sharc was talking about the author and not the owner of the place he's currently writing for

not that I've paid it much mind, but the people who vouch for the author tend to be head-in-the-sand folks who absolutely will not expend any energy on "drama", or the people whose mental image of him is locked to the era when he was actively plagiarising message boards for features
