Not content with finally bringing Tetris The Grand Master home via their Arcade Archives series for contemporary console hardware, Hamster's new-found focus on '90s arcade titles continues with news that 1994's Mazinger Z shmup will come to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2023. The announcement was made at an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the anime's original television broadcast.

Banpresto (now Bandai Namco) were responsible for a not insignificant number of licensed arcade games during the '90s, including the likes of Dragonball Z, Gundam, Macross and Ultraman. Those aside, my mind is lazer-focused on the possibility that we finally see an arcade-accurate home conversion of 1995's belt scroller Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (Fun fact: this was the first game developed by Gazelle, a company born from the ashes of Toaplan's bankruptcy). Both Mazinger Z and Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon share the same CAVE 68000 hardware, so my fingers and toes are being kept firmly crossed!

personally I'm hoping for Chou-Jikuu Yousai Macross II, a really neat shmup where you have infinite lives but progress is tied to reaching a score goal on each stage before a timer runs out

of course, we know how messy it is getting anything Macross out outside of Japan...
