i love the apalachian mountains so much - we’re down in north carolina and the climate is much hotter than up north but it’s the same mountains and it feels like we’re home <3

#did a lot of thinking about how these mountains have shaped my expectations of the world on today’s drive#i always get nervous in flat places because i feel exposed and like i’m two seconds away from getting lost#and my assumption was that mountains solved those two problems….#but i think that’s just because my mountains are covered in trees - the valleys tend to be thinner - and importantly they’re usually in ridges??#out west most of the mountains are bare so it’s better than flat but not too great re: feeling exposed#and they also don’t follow patterns like ours do (or maybe i’m just not used to the patterns)#in my head mountains are great for navigating because if you go up you basically can’t get lost unless you go back down#and you can use that for long distances because you can follow a ridge for miles#but out west there aren’t usually long ridges idk#one us not better than the other but i am accustomed to a big forest of ridged mountains and i’m so happy to see them again
