aliens are easy to believe in because i think the vast size of the universe is such that there's probably something out there that isn't on earth cultivating its own way of life and understanding of the world as they see it. my only reservations with regards to alien stuff is who presents that information and how they do so.

that the majority of evidence of alien life comes from the u.s. military, weapon manufacturers, and government intelligence agencies concerns me. not because it disproves of alien life, but because the question of why they are the first ones to make contact with alien life never gets considered. every science fiction story i can think of about aliens in first contact situations frames the militant response to extraterrestrial life as dangerous and ignorant and prejudiced; but no one treats our real, actual military with any such skepticism for reasons that elude me.

regardless of whether aliens have in fact visited us, i fail to see how ignoring the multifarious ways in which our militaries profoundly destroy our own quality of life will help us appreciate extraterrestrial life. the propaganda engines that justify the endlessly increasing budgets for u.s. defense and intelligence activities have not made people empathize with human beings on the other side of the world, so i fail to see how they will aid us connect with living beings that don't call earth their home.

if the aliens do not learn to scorn or fear or avoid humans because of their experiences with our greatest killers, i can only imagine how they'd feel to see us struggle to survive beneath the boots of the soldiers meant to protect us.
