It's left over, because the root of the word is the same as "swear"; your answer is your oath.
that does make etymological sense, though i don't know if it pushes me over the hurdle of thinking the "w" doesn't need to be there
Well the good/bad news is no one is in charge of the English language, so if you want to reform it you have the same ability as anyone else!
