i really do like x-com, but i hate when it decides to drop enemies right behind you. feels like the game gives me mixed messages about how i'm supposed to be advancing up the map when it drops a guy two feet from the civvie i'm escorting. like if the pretense of a mission is that they establish that can happen ahead of time, that you're walking into an ambush or something, that's one thing. but it sometimes feels like the game does this just to pressure me to keep moving, when that goes against the careful cover-hopping that keeps my team alive.

and if i rush in and catch people by surprise, i feel like i should be able to take advantage of that? because the enemy getting to jump to cover for free while your people don't get the same grace when enemies get the drop on them kinda stinks
