well, i read the last volumes of dunmeshi. i can't really remember what other manga i've actually read at this point, but i feel confident in saying that it's likely the best graphic novel i've ever read.

really solid all around, never loses its sincerity and severity even when it's humorous, the art style remains consistently beautiful throughout, the characters are all so lovable and grow so much over the course of the story you can't help but love them. the vignettes of different characters, their backstories, and the various situations they endure and overcome unfold into a staggering epic that reflects on the purpose of human endeavours in the face of our finite existence, trapped in an eternal cycle of material consumption. i can't think of anything of this scope and ambition that succeeds at its goals so profoundly. at the end of the day, through all the world-shattering possibilities and changes that comes to pass, the story invites us not to resist the condition of our lives, but to do what we can: relish the life that we have with the friends and communities who love us. and what better way is there to achieve this then around the dinner table where warm meals made with love and care await us?

i wouldn't say the comic is flawless, but it's truly special and extraordinary. highly recommend you take the chance to read this one, if you haven't already! very curious about ryoko kui's other work, and would be very interested in reading whatever she does after this.
