in reply to @best-lamby's post:

music + my favorite songs (im not very good with genres my apologies):

  • gabba - fridge magnets (math rock)
  • thornhill - raw, viper room (metalcore? inspired by deftones)
  • hazylazy - ultrawanker, juxtapose (shoegaze)
  • smiling broadly - patterns of behavior (not sure?)
  • jane remover - can you tell? (also not sure)

games:

  • 13 sentinels aegis rim (i liked the story! one of those games where its best to go in blind. mecha with high schoolers.)
  • library of ruina (also good story and very fun gameplay, about a guy that wanders into a library and helps the librarian there.)
  • a dance of fire and ice (rhythm game, very hard but fun. press the button in time with the beat to travel along a path)
  • dead cells (sideways jumping game where you feel cool when you fight monsters, also challenging, in genre words roguelite metroidvania)
  • crypt of the necrodancer (rhythm game but you're controlling a person in a dungeon, you press buttons to the beat, also a roguelite)

comics:

  • gokurakugai (gorgeous art, about a duo that takes on various jobs and fights monsters)

edit: added more games, music, and comics

trying to think of obscure things so
comics: room of swords on webtoon. the protag is a demisexual bi/panromantic man of color and i would die for him
movies: the lego batman movie and puss in boots the last wish are both unironically really good. i will stand by this forever. the last wish is written with themes for adults even though its animated
shows: generation loss. ep3 is the best and its not even close but streaming a show live on twitch with audience interaction is amazing. also moon knight has one of the best depictions of DID that i’ve ever seen.
games: it steals, knitopet. horror games that made me almost cry. also in stars and time having incredible queer (first aroace rep i’ve seen that didn’t suck in a game) and mental health representation!! but also play ultrakill its my favorite game ever .
books: pokemon adventures 1-7. i feel like a lot of people forget pokemon has a manga
music: biting elbows, nothing but thieves, i dont know how but they found me, azali (also on youtube)

Movies: The Last Unicorn (1982), Wolfwalkers (2020).
Not super obscure, but most people who I mention these to don't know them. (I feel like this sentence is not grammatically correct but Idk how to write it better hgjdkghsd, u prolly understood what I meant)

Music: Anything from Femtanyl (yes thats an actual artist) or Rezz (did sum stuff w/ deadmau5, it goes hard)

Game: Mindustry (factory/resource management/tower defense game) (free on itchio and mobile but steam version costs money)

Book: Blindsight by Peter Watts (my favorite book atm, scifi that asks a lot of questions about sentience, also has vampires)

Shows: The Terror (got me hyperfixated on maritime disasters), Scavengers Reign (about a crew of a crashed spaceship trying to get off a very bizarre and alien planet)

Games: Solium Infernum (if civilization was set in Hell, gorgeous art style as well), Disco Elysium (probably the most impactful piece of art I've had the joy of interacting with, not really obscure lol)

Eee so i tried to be sparse but that didnt really work out lol

Comics:

  • Briar (retelling of sleeping beauty, im eagerly waiting for continuation)
  • The spark in your eyes (webtoon) (lot of drama and trauma, exploring lives of people of two nations after the end of a great war between them)
  • Hooky (webcomic) (I read it a long time ago, so I dont remember much, but i really liked it)
  • Peanuts (i dont think i need to write anything here)
  • Jackson’s diary (webcomic) (teen drama with magic)
  • The Dark Lord’s Confession’s (magical fantasy, amazing art and story so far)
  • Picture a Favela (autobiography)

Series:

  • Tangled The Series (my comfort show, and yes its continuation of the movie)
  • Epithet erased (short web series, specific kind of humor but still cool)
  • Revue starlight (i actually gotta rewatch it, so damn good, reality is blending with stage world, still havent fully grasped what was happening there exactly lol)
  • Cowboy Bebop (kinda classic, just vibing)
  • Little Witch Academia (witches)
  • Mine (quite short korean drama, i really like portrayal of different relationships there)(also i think first main lesbian character in korean tv)

Movies:

  • Mullholand Drive (classic, but its so damn good isnt it)
  • Elisabeth das Musical (not exactly a movie, there are many proshots, I recommend to start with original 1992 vienna version)
  • The Deluge (classic of polish cinema, best for movie night with friends)
  • Joshua and the Promised Land (absolute masterpiece, my friend’s favourite movie, you need to watch it at least once in your life)

Games:

  • Dishonored (been obsessed ab this game for past few months. Immersive sim and stealth game. amazing worldbuilding + leaves one with a lot of moral dillemas)
  • Tangle Tower (indie murder mystery, music, story and art create very atmospheric experience, cant recomment it enough (also its only few hours long))
  • Horizon Zero Dawn (basically uncovering how our civilization ceased to exist, makes one reaally invested, also amazing gameplay (great bow mechanics + not a straightforward combat but hunting machines, so you need to think strategically)
  • Reverse 1999 (cn gacha game with amazing story and great, diverse (as for cn games) cast, lot of lesbians + one intersex character who uses any pronouns, also damn lot of literature and history references (almost character is based on real ppl / concepts etc)

Books (so my past reads consist mainly of teen/children books (which ive read hundreds of lol),classics (year 1984, the plague, crime and punishment, etc) and agatha christie’s books, so dont really have any obscure ones lol):

  • The Library of Babel (really intwresting concept, i think theres website based on it)
  • Rebecca (psychological drama??? ‘’Dark” with interesting twist)
  • The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt (i think title says it all lol)
  • The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas + Earthsea trilogy (kinda classics as well, still never a bad time to recommend Ursula le Guin’s books)
  • Balladyna (polish drama, twisted and well written)
  • Master and Margarita (ik its a classic, but i love it)

😅 okay the thing that's sticking out like a sore thumb is referring to 1984 as a classic - and not just some nonsensical bullshit made up to demonize communism (bc anyone who learns what communism is goes "hey that sounds pretty nice")

I don't think those two things are mutually exclusive tho. A classic doesn't have to be morally plausible, i think what counts is its impact on society and culture. (Also I really don't wanna get into political dispute, but I think what Orwell wanted to warn people about was was the "communism" that was present in Soviet Union, mainly the totalitarian aspect. Like guy was literally anti-capitalist as well, he just saw how those egalitarian ideologies can be distorted and used by corrupted people to seize power)

shows: star trek deep space 9
books: wolf in white van/universal harvester/devil house all by john darnielle of the mountain goats
music: jhariah, stomach book
games: cassette beasts, esp if you like pokemon but want More
