as far as the magic itself, we'd done a spell to get a room at MFF maybe the year before? and it kinda got out of hand. we got a hotel off in the outskirts and had a kinda frustrating con because of it, but then after that, all the less-privileged people around us started getting better housing in more core positions, which we found to be an acceptable tradeoff (as you mentioned, we have a long memory — our spells go long too)
another thing is that we kept telling people is that we were going to accidentally buy a house. guitar gf told us "alex, one does not accidentally sign a mortgage" and we told her "watch me", and then stumbled backwards, along with our partner, into doing exactly that.
as we're house-shopping, various things about this one pique our interest, such as the very good electrical wiring, the heat pump, and a particular connector that we've never seen before but can tell by looking at it is part of a radio antenna.
the bit that really clinched it, though, was one of the financial guys coming up with a figure that was a fraction close to to 666, and he said "we can round that up to 667 or down to 665". we interrupt, all "no no no, go ahead and hail satan here, we're fine with that". our partner was like "alex don't be offensive" and we were like "he brought it up!"
the people at the bank were all also asking that question about what kind of magic in various guises: "wait, this is your first offer on this house? and it was accepted? and this is the first house that you seriously put an offer on? all my years and i've never seen that."
non-magical types would insist that this is just random coincidence and there's no way we could have done a spell that had the effect of, against the flow of time, arranging a future wherein us getting this particular house would be a guaranteed event. and then we point out that this house has the previous 1970s generation of intercom system that our grandma's house had a 1980s version of as a kid.
