The first photo I took of myself this evening is about representative of the level of understanding and practice I'd had using strobes, and lighting portraits in general.
The second photo was taken 3 hours later, when my power pack blew up.

Wow leaving aside the fact that it's literally night and day that's night and day
I guess I should go do 3 hours of strobe / portrait lighting practice sometime (though hopefully with less equipment failure)
that first one only has daylight in it because it was a 1/3s exposure at iso 50 and f/32. I had to increase the shutter speed because it was making everything blurry. 2000ws of flash obliterates daylight, as it turns out
oh yeah that's bright bright. i've got a 900ws monolight around here and it's definitely capable of putting up >EV 15 conditions at short range (though i've only used it at full power a handful of times for extremely slow large format film 'cause whoo mama that thing's scary when it goes off). unsurprised to hear twice that spread across a few heads allows you to do pretty much whatever you want

why would you do this
i wanted some daylight in my photo and the power pack i was using for the first shots only goes down to 400ws,
now i'm seeing this again i have to admire how 1990s that second one is. this is the highest possible complement, to be clear
